Announcements. . .

A brief Board Meeting was to follow the regular meeting.

On Tuesday, January 19th at 7:30 AM, the International Services Committee was to be convened by Chairman Skankey.

President Scott reviewed the situation in Haiti and read a letter from District Governor, Luz-Maria Ortiz:

Dear Fellow Rotarians from District 5240,
As we watch the news about the tremendous disaster in Haiti, our clubs feel the need to respond immediately to this tragedy. I would like to assure you Rotary and D-5240 is and will be in Haiti to provide assistance to the victims of the earthquake

Keep in mind we are not necessarily First Responders in these terrible natural disasters

RRFC Brenda Cressey expressed "we may add extra stress on the recovery and relief efforts when we do not have the necessary systems in place to care for our volunteers".
We recommend you visit the RI Web site at: http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/100113_news_haitirelief.aspx

The Foundation established a Haiti earthquake fund U.S. Rotarians can donate to help with short-, long-term recovery efforts.

Donations contributed by your club, individual Rotarians or community members may be sent to the new Donor Advised Fund (DAF) set up by District 7020.  If you chose to send your donations directly to the DAF please find the pdf file attached.

Another suggestion:  Is to send your contributions directly to the District office - 3394 Bryan Ave. Simi Valley, CA  93063 - to keep track of the club and member donations. We want to ensure that member donations are coordinated and not sent to several different agencies or Rotary Districts and then the District can send the member donations to the DAF, which will directly support relief efforts in Haiti.   This is the recommendation I suggested in my previous communications.

The relief efforts will continue for a long time. Please take some time to look at your options and feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

I thank you for your efforts facing disasters like this. I am overwhelmed and moved by the responses from all the clubs and individual Rotarians in our district. You make me proud to be a Rotarian.

Warm Regards,

Luz Maria Ortiz District Governor 2009-2010 Rotary District 5240

The Rotary Club of Ojai in coordination with Ojai West will match funds donated up to $1500. The Club responded generously to the opportunity to help with a flow of checks. The NHL (Nordhoff High Leaders) and Gray Gables have also donated through our Club. Remember to write your checks to RCOF and note at the bottom of the check "Haiti Earthquake Aid" to earmark the tax-free donation.

Tony Thacher told us of the Rotary District 5240 Conference on Global Drinking Water, The Race to 2015, a review of Drinking Water Projects underway in the District, other groups in Central California at work on drinking water and where RI is going on Drinking Water Funding. It will take place on February 13, 2010 at 9AM in Richter Hall at California Lutheran University at 60 West Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks, CA. For more information contact Tony Thacher or Scott Smith or click here.

Next Week

Next week's program will feature Dr. Richard Rush, President, California State University Channel Islands for an update on California's newest university.

PEP Student of the Month-Cameron Kunde

Dr. Fred introduced our PEP Student of the Month, Cameron Kunde from Meiners Oaks School. Cameron's teacher, Janis Duncan, told us of his determination and desire to do his best. With this motivation he has daily successes in academics and sports. He is a great role model for the other students. Outside of school he is on a club soccer team at Matilija, the track and basketball teams through the Ojai Recreation Department , and most recently he has begun to race BMX bicycles. Congratulations, Cameron.

Fining: Colin Jones

Like a good cop, bad cop, Colin (bad cop) and our gracious Judy Gabriel (great cop) led a fining/reverse fining session. A host of Rotary Anniversaries and those people that "did something extra in December" were treated to variety of sweets, hand-baked by our Judy.

President Scott confessed he had purchased a Toyota Camry Hybrid and Colin, caught up in the festivities fined himself! This led into a series of what can be described as the worst collection of puns where the finee had to furnish the punch line. Example: A person goes to the psychiatrist and tells him, "I feel like a tepee sometimes, then feel like wigwam. Tepee...Wigwam. It goes on day and night. Doctor, what's wrong with me?" Are you ready for the answer? "You are two tents". You had to be there. Larry Wilde, Frank Finck, Kay Bliss, Ren Adam, Dave Neville, and Bill Monnot suffered a fine and a plethora of these groaners.

A better New Year...

The Program: Jack Huyler and Kay Bliss

Our cowboy poet was ill and had to cancel at the last minute. Jack, a irrepressible storyteller, came to the mike and regaled us with two stories, each involving body parts and amputation. Ah, the stuff of prime comedy material. Thanks, Jack for the great yarns.

Kay Bliss shared a Power Point presentation from the Poverty Conference she attended and reviewed some of the great things our Club and Rotary International are doing.
