Haiti update:

Rotary clubs and districts worldwide are mobilizing resources to deliver urgently needed relief to the millions affected by Haiti's devastating earthquake.

District 7020, which includes Haiti, has flown in 70 planes filled with more than 60,000 pounds of medical equipment and supplies into the cities of Pignon and Port-de-Paix to bypass logistical problems in the hard-hit capital of Port-au-Prince.

“Rotary had an incredible infrastructure established before the quake, which has made our relief efforts very effective,” says Dick McCombe , past district governor and Haiti liaison chair. “We're flying in supplies through backdoor channels and doing things a lot of agencies can't do.”

The district's Haiti Task Force, set up two years ago to administer all financial aid to the nation, is working with local Rotary clubs to deliver aid to Port-au-Prince and those who have taken refuge in the countryside.

McCombe says Rotary was in a good position to help in Haiti, with 33 projects already underway to provide water, sanitation, medical care, and education.

“We changed from teaching children how to read to saving their lives,” says McCombe.

“Rotarians are incredibly generous and are doing what needs to be done,” says McCombe . “We are setting aside some of these contributions for long-term recovery.”

Within the next two weeks, McCombe says, a barge will be hired to transport 20-30 tons of clothes, blankets, folding beds, and other item to Haiti from Nassau, Bahamas.

Total amount raised to date: $10,145.34! This has been due to the generosity of the Ojai Community, both young and old (Gray Gables, Monica Ros School, and Nordhoff High School Leaders), and the Rotarians of Ojai.

"Catalina Seabed Clean-up/Restoration"
Ocean Defenders Alliance, a nonprofit marine conservation group from Huntington Beach, is removing a 9,000lb fishing net (40X700 feet) designed to last hundreds of years, ensnared to the sunken(2006) trawler 'Infidel'(150' down) that has been entangling and killing hundreds of sea lions, dolphins and sharks and fish ever since, littering the seabed with the trapped victims remains. Kurt Lieber leads an on-going attempt to slowly remove this silent killer piece by piece at their risk of diving very deep (150')in murky and cold water thus saving an enormous amount of sea-life that otherwise would be lost.

Fining: John Rennell

John Rennell was fine master today: His topic for fining was TRF. The Ojai Rotary clubs average donation to TRF in 1998 was $22,000. In 2009 it was $29,000.

Dewayne Boccali was fined for not knowing that TRF begun in 1947 and was 63 years old.

Bill Hatch didn't know that TRF donations since then is $2,400,000,000.00 or $2.4 Billion dollars.

Ann Helson didn't know that 1.2 million contributors from 32,000 clubs have given to TRF.

John Lyon didn't know that the average contribution worldwide is: $24 million or $186/contributor.

Larry Simpson DID know that TRF is #1 among the top 10 big charities in % of program and Administration (More money to program and less money to admin.), but he didn't know that TRF was also in the 1% of the top 1800 four star charities.

Ron Wilson DID know (I think he was listening during Larry's question) the TRF ranks #1 of the top ten in organizational capacity (I thought John said that meant more efficient) and was also in the 1% of the 1800 four star charities in revenue/program growth. (I don't really know what that means, but it sounds impressive).

Amani Hishmeh didn't know that for Polio TRF yearly gives $95,000,000.00 for a worldwide amount of $850,000,000.00. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation gave $350,000,000.00. There have been over 2Billion inoculations worldwide.

I think these figures are on everyone's tongue. (Better than the recent food!).

Bob Davis continued his confession from last week of $500 for the Shari Skinner Educational Scholarship, that is his wife came home this past week he would double the donation. Bob gave $1000.00

The Program:

Our Program was Dr. Herb Rogove . Dr. Rogove is a critical care specialist certified both in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. With over thirty years of experience both in clinical and hospital administrative functions he has started and directed three critical care programs as well as Emergency Medicine and Hospital programs. He has had clinical appointments at the University of Southern California, University of Pittsburgh, and the Ohio State University. Dr. Rogove has published in major peer reviewed journals, is the author of Critical Care Medicine, and has lectured throughout the world. He has served as a vice-president of a physician IPA organization of 2,000 physicians while in Ohio. The governor of Ohio appointed Dr. Rogove to the Public Health Commission. He also was the founder of a youth violence prevention organization, Operation Hope and Health while living in Columbus, Ohio. Currently he is President of NeuMedicine consisting of specialist who provide patient care anywhere in the world remotely utilizing robotic technology.

He spoke on Science/Medical Advancement and Health Care of the Future. RoboDoc (not RoboCop) is the wave of the future. With access to general medical care slim to none in some areas of the world and even the United States and access to specialist even worse, he and his company have come up with a way to address this issue. He brought RoboDoc to the meeting (again, you would have to have been there to really appreciate what RoboDoc does and looks like). A doctor can be in his office with a control station (computer and monitor) and a joy stick and can move the RoboDoc around the room and people across the country or around the world in milliseconds (the commands move in milliseconds, not RoboDoc). It has 2-way audio/visual capabilities and can direct heath care workers in diagnosing and treating patients.

They already have RoboDoc working in various hospitals, and has spoken with Community Memorial in Ventura.

For CBS News coverage of the RoboDoc, click here

Final Thoughts

President Scotts parting words were from Khalil Gibran:

“And what is it to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance."

Meeting adjourned.
