In the Beginning.....

President Scott Smith called the meeting to order. Dr. Frank Finck led the Pledge of Allegiance; Dr. Carl Gross read the 4-way test. Dr. Gross then gave the following invocation:

“Dear Lord, may we love our neighbors as ourselves. Help us to bring the blessing of love and fellowship to others. Let us not be content, when others go hungry, or be serene while some lack their daily bread. Help us to be among those who are willing to sacrifice that others not be hungry, who dare to be bearers of the light to the dark loneliness of stricken lives. Let us not harden our hearts not shut our hands against the poor. Let our hearts be moved by the misery of others, and let us dare what must be dared. We are all responsible”.

Fining: Catherine Lee

Catherine did her usual splendid job in running the fining program. The twin themes of her program was “chickens or charity”. It quickly became apparent that, despite Ojai's pretensions to being close to nature, Ojai Rotarians know beans about chickens. Catherine was able to exploit that puzzling ignorance and generate a lot of hefty fines.

Program: Commanding Master Chief Dean Joyce of the Seabees

Master Chief Dean Joyce of the Seabees base in Point Magu gave a quick but comprehensive overview of the history, organization, training and current deployment of the Seabees. He devoted considerable time to the Seabees efforts in Disaster Recovery and Humanitarian interventions and used the memorable phrase “Phase O Warfare” to describe the effort of the Seabees to bring relief and self-reliance to some of the troubled parts of the world. According to Master Chief Joyce, it is the misery and suffering of poverty that are the breeding grounds of terrorism, and humanitarian relief is the first and best way to counter the threat of terrorism.

Master Chief Joyce urged us all to tour the Seabee museum at the base in Port Hueneme. There is a new museum there soon to be open.

Bob Davis spoke for all Ojai Rotarians when he asked Master Chief Joyce to convey the gratitude of Ojai Rotarians to the Seabees of Point Magu.

Final Thoughts

"The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity."

Francis Maitland Balfour
