Program: Wendy Lascher, Appellate Lawyer

Jeff Loebl introduced our speaker Wendy Lascher, an appellate lawyer in Ventura for 37 years. She has presented arguments in courts at every level, including the Supreme Court of the United States. Wendy gave us a brief lesson on the court system, explaining that there are three levels to each court system: the trial court where the first decision is made, the appellate level which often corrects procedural errors made at the trial level, and the supreme court which is the policy making level. The state courts decide most issues which affect day to day life. The Supreme Court of the United States gets approximately 8000 petitions to hear cases every year, but generally agree to hear only 75 to 100 cases per year. She encouraged Rotarians to visit the Ventura Court of Appeals which hears cases on the second Wednesday and Thursday of each month.

Final Thoughts

President Mike adjourned the meeting at 1:30 PM. In advance of the visit of District Governor Deepa Willingham on August 6, he paraphrased an inspirational message from Deepa's famous teacher, Mother Theresa,

“The miracle is not that we do service above self, it is that we are happy doing it."
