Larry Simpson told us what it means to be a Rotarian.

Heather Frankle is on the District Grant Committee and spoke about RI's future visions pilot program for grants. This program will run for 3 years and large scale matching grants will now be called Global Grants. Districts are divided up into pilot and non-pilot districts. Our district in a non-pilot district. Our Niger project is a pilot district and Simi Sunrise's Honduras project is in a non-pilot district. We are trading with them to each get these projects done. The Honduras project is to open 12-18 micro banks for micro loans by the end of 2011. This sounds like a great way to cooperate and get things done.

Around the Block

Program: Nick Frankle

Jack Jacobs introduced our speaker today, Nick Frankle —District Membership Chair. Nick is a member and Past President of the Westlake Village Sunrise Club. Nick grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC, received his BA in Physics from John Hopkins University and did his graduate work in Computer Science at the University of Maryland. He married his high school sweetheart, Heather in 1966, and she has continued to re-sing her one year renewable options ever since.

His career has been involved in the development of leading edge technologies that require the development of business plans, establishment of a customer base, support for customers, and business success – the same skills required to grow rotary membership. Some of his customers have included NASA, the Department of Defense and many Fortune 500 companies.

Even though our Rotary club continues to prosper and grow, attracting membership at the global level has been a problem for Rotary. As membership chair, Jack has had to learn that just attracting new members is only a part of the process. Assimilation, educating and retaining them are also challenges.

Nick gave a great presentation. With over 1.2 million members worldwide, 69% are 50 years and older. Each club typically loses 10% of its members each year. We need to tell people who we are and what we do. He spoke of Gen X (born 1965-1980) 40-50 million and Gen Y (born 1980-now) 70 million and the differences and what they are interested in. We need to tell people about our product. We have over 30,000 clubs in over 200 countries. Need to know your market, use the social media, Facebook, twitter, etc.

Someone gave you the gift of Rotary:

What have you done with it?

What have you received from it?

Rotary: The Gift that keeps on giving.

Welcome to Rotary

Final Thoughts

President Mike closed the meeting with:

“Ask yourself, what it means to be a Rotarian

and then go out and Build communities and Bridge Continents.”
