Kay Bliss reported on the Agadez Update! The power of the web is evident as we see gifts coming in from all over the country to help support the local people as a result of the tragic flooding in Niger. Most of the support will go to replenish the cereal banks that were destroyed with the sudden and unexpected rains. Thanks go to Kay for keeping members informed. Our own Dr. Bob Skankey finally made it out of Morocco and met with Leslie Clark to see how he can best help in the work with the Nomads. To access Leslie Clark's Blog go to: http://nomadfoundation.blogspot.com/ and follow her experiences in Niger.

Stacy Benneto (New gal with the Bowling Alley )

John Russell, Suzanne Smith gave confessions,

Jerry Kaplan wished everyone a happy Rosh Hashanah,

Judy Gabriel reminded everyone about the Peace Activities and listening circles schedule for Saturday at Libbey Park,

Amani Hishmeh shared good news about her Medicine Shoppe being approved by Medicare.

Finally Bob Davis had a bucket a woes and hoped that his $20 would change his life and get him back on track.

The Program

We were treated to hear about the inner workings of the Los Padres Forest from Al West . Al was in the S.B. club and Fresno Club before he wised up and came to the Ojai Club. His history lesson went back to 1898 when this area from Pine Mountain and Zaca Lake was known as the ‘Forest Reserve'. The Wilderness Act of 1964 changed the name again to San Rafael. From 1975 to 79 Al served as a Supervisor for 2 million acres and over 1000 employees. We learned that National Parks are for future and scientific purposes whereas National Forests are primarily for the conservation and uses of natural resources. Al retired in 1993 having served as the Deputy Chief for more than 191 million acres of forest.

Dave Brubaker was born in the San Fernando Valley and moved to Ventura as a surf kid. He went to San Diego State for the 5 year plan, surfed some more and thought being a stock broker sounded cool.

He worked with Jim Anderson but couldn't handle the ‘uncertainty' of the fluctuating income. He worked with Ventura's own Bud Milligan and started getting the hang of CFO type work. Joe Kreutz with County Commerce Bank hired him, let him surf on lunch breaks and by this time Dave and his college sweetheart were raising their son and daughter. Dave is happily married, still surfs, loves being the president of Ojai Community Bank and tries to act like a banker when he needs to.

Meeting was adjourned at 1:31pm and all in attendance enjoyed learning about these two members: Forest/Mountain Rambler and Salty Beach Banker.

Final Thoughts

"Do not be too moral. You may cheat yourself out of much life. Aim above morality. Be not simply good; be good for something."

Henry David Thoreau
