In the Beginning....

On this bright and beautiful fall day the Ojai Rotary Club met for service and fellowship.

President Scott Smith brought the meeting to order and asked Bob Daddi to lead the Pledge of Allegiance and Larry Beckett to read the 4-way Test.

Guests and Visiting Rotarians

The club extended a welcome to its guests: Sanford and Chris Drucker, Cindy Jones, Nancy Mintie, Diane Duncan and to our special visiting Rotarian Leslie Clark.

Blue Badges

As a proud Ian MacLean looked on, President Scott performed the ceremony wherein 3 members turned in their red badges and received their blue badges signifying permanent Rotary membership. The new permanent members are:

  • John Rennell
  • Dave Brubaker
  • Amani Hishmeh

All three were warmly welcomed to the Club.

International Service Report

Dr. Bob Skankey gave a spirited and enthusiastic report on the activities of the International Service Committee. Throughout his report, he returned frequently to the theme that, as individuals, we might be powerless to effect much change for good, but when we join as Rotarians, we have the power of a committed and energetic organization. Bob went on to provide these examples:

  • 75 schools in Patzcuarro, Mexico, now have clean drinking water
  • The Ghana street girls project has been operating for 9 years
  • The work that Carl Gross and others have done in Honduras
  • The work that Leslie Clark does in Niger
  • The student exchange program
  • The NID programs in India and Nigeria

Fining: Lady Jane

Jane McCarthy found it a challenge to do a complete and thorough fining session, since there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth and self-flagellation about the previous week's football results. Jane soldiered on despite considerable distractions.

The Program:

The scheduled speaker cancelled the night before the meeting, but the ever resourceful President Scott filled in the gap with two items: first, there was an intriguing puzzle which required every member of the club to identify 12 other members who fit the clues. The goal was to identify the members as quickly as possible, and Dr. David Watson was the winner.

Then, Dr. Watson went on to give a craft talk about his life and his practice as a dentist. Dr. Watson's talk was droll, amusing and informative.

Final Thoughts

"On Thanksgiving Day all over America, families sit down to dinner at the same moment - halftime."
