In the Beginning.....

At 12:10 President Bill Gilbreth rang the bell to commence the beginning of another meeting of awesome Rotarians.  He was glad we were all there…. and we were too.

Mike Malone lead us in the flag salute and Matt Clements gave us a thoughtful invocation.  Then we escorted our guests and ourselves to the buffet for a yummy lunch.

At 12:30 President Bill rang the bell again to thank Matt Clements for setting up the room for our meeting, Smitty for tickling the ivories, Leslie Bouche and Marc Whitman for warmly greeting all of our members and guests, Mike Malone for the roving mic, Anne Carper for manning the front table and Ginger Case for hosting us.

Fining:

Fine Master, Colin Jones lead the way to another outstanding fining session.  Our only confession was a whopper!  Judy Gabriel presented a check for $2,500.00 from Sandy Treadwell, a local artist that was looking for a way to give back to the community.  Judy thought quickly, explained that our Rotary Club had a generous Scholarship Fund, and he chose that venue to donate his $2,500.00.   Way to go Judy!

Colin then proceeded to go back in time and asked historical questions… stumping all but two (Marc Whitman and Patricia Teague Anderson) with fun facts.  He also gave us the longest question to date about Randy Weaver’s unfortunate disaster.

Program:

Patricia Teague Anderson, Program Chair, introduced Laurie Browne, who was raised in the foreign services and went to UCSB for her cultural anthropology degree.  A recent graduate, she is working on an independent research project about attitudes towards restorative justice in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.  In July 2015, Laurie went to Rwanda to participate in a Healing and Rebuilding Our Community international facilitator training program, known at HEROC.  She gave us an in depth story about her background and what led to her experiences in Rwanda.  After the genocide in 1994 between the Tootsie and Hutus, HEROC was formed to mediate peace for the Rwanda people. Afterwards, Laurie utilized her experience to engage in a program in Washington, D.C. for “Returning Citizens”.
It was also noted, by Kay Bliss, that this scenario was similar to what Bosnia was undergoing.  She pointed out how our club is contributing to enhance Bosnia’s recovery.  Rotary Club of Ojai rocks!

Final Thoughts

President Bill gave us his closing thought by one of his favorite philosophers, Charles Schultz:

"Sometimes I lie awake at night and I ask, where have I gone wrong?  Then a voice says to me, this is going to take more than one night!"

He rang the bell to signify the end of another great meeting!
